Throughout his career he has done frequent jury trials, so he is not afraid to take on tough cases and fight the US Attorney’s office. In addition to taking private criminal cases, Mr. Scherer is an active member of the Chicago Federal Defender Panel, renowned as the nation’s most prestigious federal defender office. He regularly handles numerous complex criminal cases involving white collar crime, conspiracy, government contract fraud, wire and mail fraud, computer crime, extortion and bribery, abuse of public office, and drug offenses.

Civil Rights
Using his skills as a trial attorney and his ability to find and expose police misconduct, Mr. Scherer has gotten justice for people abused by police agencies. For example, his cases have involved wrongful imprisonment, assault, and in-custody death. Many criminal investigations also involve police misconduct. Mr. Scherer has represented defendants in their criminal trials, and then represented them as plaintiffs in their lawsuits against the city. On the other hand, because of his knowledge of proper police procedure, he has also been able to represent police officers wrongly accused of misconduct.
